Planning a proposal is one thing. Planning it from the other side of the world, keeping it completely secret and making sure the location, timing and photography all come together is something else entirely.
When James contacted us from Melbourne, he already knew the most important part: he wanted to ask Rebecca to marry him in Sicily. The rest still had to be built around that idea.
The result was a private proposal at the Grand Hotel San Pietro in Taormina, overlooking the Mediterranean and Isola Bella, followed by a quiet toast and a photographic walk through one of the most beautiful corners of Sicily.
This is the story of how a carefully planned Taormina proposal became something that still felt completely spontaneous.
Planning a surprise proposal in Taormina from Australia
James did not simply arrive in Sicily with a ring and hope for the best. He started planning well before the trip, while Rebecca knew absolutely nothing.
There were practical decisions to make: the location, the time of day, the light, the logistics and, most importantly, how to get Rebecca to the exact spot without making her suspicious.
This is where local knowledge matters. A proposal can look effortless in photographs, but behind a genuine surprise there is usually a very precise plan.
For couples organising everything from abroad, working with people who know Taormina means avoiding a long list of small mistakes: choosing a location that is overcrowded at the wrong hour, expecting the sun to set over the sea when it actually disappears behind the mountains, or discovering too late that a private terrace needs to be reserved in advance.
A private terrace at Grand Hotel San Pietro
For James and Rebecca, the location was the private terrace of the Grand Hotel San Pietro.
It is one of those places that does not need much decoration. The view already does most of the work: the Mediterranean below, Isola Bella in the distance, the Sicilian coastline and the changing light over Taormina.
More importantly, it gave James what he really needed: privacy.
No crowd standing behind Rebecca. No tourists walking into the frame at the crucial moment. No need to rush.
Just the two of them, a hidden photographer, and a terrace where the whole proposal could unfold naturally.
The moment Rebecca realised what was happening
Rebecca thought she was simply enjoying another part of their Sicilian trip.
Then James stopped.
There is always a fraction of a second during a surprise proposal when one person understands what is happening and the other is still trying to process it. That was the moment we were waiting for.
The surprise on her face was real. So were the trembling hands, the laughter and the tears that came immediately afterwards.
James’ connection to Sicily made the moment even more personal. His grandfather was Sicilian, so choosing the island for such an important question was not simply about finding a beautiful background. It was also a way of returning to a place that already belonged to his family story.
What happens after the yes?
The proposal itself lasts only a few seconds. The story does not.
Once the ring was on Rebecca’s hand and the first wave of emotion had passed, they finally had time to breathe, laugh and take in what had just happened.
A private aperitivo was waiting for them on the terrace, with Sicilian wine and local food. No schedule to chase. No need to immediately turn the moment into a photo session.
We gave them space first.
Then, when everything had settled, we continued with photographs around the terrace and the hotel. This is usually when couples become completely themselves again. The nervousness disappears, the secret is finally over, and the photographs become less about the proposal itself and more about the strange, happy feeling of suddenly being engaged.
Why planning and photography have to work together
A beautiful location alone is not enough.
The person organising the proposal needs to think about how the couple will arrive, where the person proposing should stand, what the partner will see first and where the photographer can remain hidden without missing the moment.
Photography has to be considered before the proposal happens, not afterwards.
For James and Rebecca, the timing, the terrace and our position were planned so that he could focus on one thing only: Rebecca.
That is the real purpose of good proposal planning. Not making the moment feel produced, but making all the preparation disappear when it matters.
A Taormina proposal that still felt completely theirs
There were plans behind the scenes, but nothing about James and Rebecca’s reaction was staged.
