There is a precise spot in Taormina where the sea opens up like a stage and the Ionian light does that thing it only does in Sicily. That spot is called La Rotonda sul Mare, the panoramic terrace of Hotel San Pietro Taormina, and on May 15th it became the place where Miroslav asked Izabela to marry him.
This is a short story about one of the most beautifully planned private terrace proposals in Taormina I have photographed this season.
A Love Story That Travelled to Sicily
Miroslav and Izabela both work in the medical field, and they flew in from Bulgaria for one reason only: this proposal, on this terrace, with this view. He had spent months imagining it; she had no idea.

May 15th: The Day the Sky Cooperated Anyway
The morning was cloudy. Not the postcard Sicilian day Miroslav had been hoping for. But Sicilian light does not behave like normal light — when the sun is hidden, the sea turns a colour somewhere between mercury and silk, and everything glows from underneath. The pictures from that afternoon prove it.
Miroslav had told Izabela they had a dinner reservation at Batu, the elegant restaurant of Hotel San Pietro, with a short stop on the terrace beforehand for a couple of photos and a toast with the view. The two of them walked down together, accompanied by the hotel staff, completely unaware that we were already in position.
The Moment
My team and I were hidden, waiting for one single signal: the second Miroslav would drop to one knee.
It came, and we started shooting. From a distance Izabela could not see, with a long lens, because the only thing a proposal photographer in Taormina should never do is interrupt the moment. The first frames are the most honest ones — the trembling hands, the laugh that arrives before the yes, the embrace held against the railing while Isola Bella did what Isola Bella does best: sit there, ridiculously beautiful, and not steal the scene.
